The Compassion of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Helped Me Obtain the Position That Changed My Life

In the closing decade of the 80s, I set out on a low-cost journey to Europe with a friend. Since my companion was exploring starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had arranged a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the dining hall, where we picked up meals, sat down, and began chatting with people eating there.

Sitting next to me was an gentleman from Iraq pursuing an engineering degree at an Ivy League institution. He asked me what I my profession was, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been performing experiments with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I consider applying for a role with them. I laughed it off, saying that I was about to fly to Europe and, additionally, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, returning to the canteen that night. The Iraqi student approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Since he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but straight off explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where anything feels possible – she responded: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for a trio of years. A perk of the job was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I seized the chance to earn a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I don’t even know his identity, but his selfless gesture altered my destiny in so many ways. I didn't possess the bravery or self-belief to approach someone at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Additionally, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but wouldn't have been able to pay for it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that gig at Columbia paved the way for a job in Zurich where I got to know my handsome spouse from France, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
